I hope this email finds everyone happy, healthy and safe. We are planning for a “normal” curling season this year with the same scheduled league play and events as we have held in the past. Some of the events are listed below with dates. We are unsure what, if any, COVID protocols will be in place but we will let you know as we get closer to opening. League play will start on Thursday September 23 with the 1pm Masters competitive league followed by the evening leagues. If you are having issues with registration please email the office.

I will be back in the office more regularly now so you can expect more updates in the coming days and weeks.

If anyone has any questions, concerns or thoughts about curling this season please email the office at manager@abbotsfordcurling.com.

If you know your team / individual will not be returning please let us know so we can work on filling all of the leagues as best as possible.

May 2021 Update from the Board

May 6, 2021 T. White

Greetings from The Board,

I hope everyone is doing well in this latest round of Covid ups and downs.  It seems that we take two steps forward and four steps back all in the same month.  April was no different.  However, though I hesitate to even think of it, maybe the light at the end of the tunnel in May, is not a train but a gradual relaxation of some of the restrictions that will return us to a more normal life.

The Board held their last regular meeting of the year in April and barring emergent circumstances will not be meeting again until August.  There are few changes to report from the last update. To review; while we lost money this season, we have funds to commence the 2021/22 season and we are still planning to have a regular curling season starting at the end of September.  The Calendar of events is now posted on the web site and some important dates are listed below.

The Annual General Meeting, scheduled for September 22, will be a virtual as well as an in-person meeting.  The virtual link and the pertinent information will be sent out in early September. Please plan to attend one way or the other.

We secured a New Horizons grant which is being used to renovate the two upstairs washrooms.  The renovations should be completed by start of the curling season.  We were also successful in securing a gaming grant which will support our junior programs and equipment purchases.  We are hoping to apply for a Federal accessibility grant to give us a fully wheelchair accessible washroom in the lower lounge.

I don’t think anyone predicted April 2021 to be a big Covid step backward to conditions like last fall.  However, vaccinations are proceeding at an ever-increasing pace, the curve is slowly bending downward, the weather is improving, people are outside in the sun and despite some setbacks, I am more hopeful that we will be able to enjoy a normal curling season starting September 23.  That is nearly 5 months away.  A lot can happen in that much time.  We will monitor both the positive and the negative events and adjust if necessary.  The key to a successful season next year is to have our regular curlers return to participate in the many events Kent has planned and for all of us to encourage new curlers to join us.  We were, are and will continue to be a social, fun bunch of folks!

Have a safe, fun filled wonderful summer with your family and friends!

On Behalf of the Board of Directors

Gord Wallington

President, ACC

Closed for the Season

December 15, 2020 T. White

Hi All Abbotsford Curlers,

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.

Your curling club BOD has decided to cancel curling for the remainder of the 2020/21 curling season. We now will start planning and look forward to opening up again in September 2021 when we can have a more ‘normal’ curling season with regular events and activities.

This was again another very difficult decision to make but we believe it is the safest and best decision at this time. We all agreed that the existing order will most likely be extended past January 8 and the number of COVID cases is most likely to rise over the next few weeks. With that in mind we feel it is best to end the season now so we don’t have to continue to wonder if / when we will open. We can now focus on just staying safe and getting through this pandemic so we can enjoy the upcoming golf and ball season.

We also want ask you to consider the possibility of donating your league fees or a portion thereof to the club to help cover the costs of operating this season. The club has operated the last 5 years in the black and built up some savings to ensure the future of the club is positive and we will stay open, however this year we will have operated at a loss, how much of a loss will depend on how much is refunded to our curlers. I know this is a lot to ask of our curlers during these difficult times but if you have the means the club would greatly appreciate any donations at this time; after all this is your club and the success will depend on all of you.

We will have the refund policy finalized and available this week for those in need of a refund of their curling league fees.

I personally want to thank all of you for your understanding, patience and support during these difficult times and I look forward to seeing you all healthy and safe in September 2021. So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone, please stay safe and keep healthy over the holiday season.

If anyone has any questions please email the office or just respond to this email.

Stay Safe everyone !!!!!

Cheers,

Kent & Della

Closed Until Jan. 4th

November 24, 2020 T. White

Hi All Abbotsford Curlers,

We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.

Your curling club BOD has decided to cancel curling until January 2021.

This was a very difficult decision to make following a decision to open just last week. However following Dr. Henry’s announcement Monday afternoon and her comments that the “intent” of the order was to reduce everyone’s social interactions and activities at this time and for everyone to “do their part” to help reduce the spread of COVID. We believe this is the correct decision to do our part to help fight this virus. As some of you have commented “If we are not supposed to see our family or grand children how can we in good conscience go curling and interact with others.”

I personally want to thank all of you for your understanding, patience and support during these difficult times and I look forward to seeing you all healthy and safe in the new year.

So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone, please stay safe and keep healthy over the next several weeks so we can all get back together in the new year.

I will keep everyone informed during the coming weeks of what is happening or being planned for the club so stay tuned.

“This is not forever it is just for now”

If anyone has any questions please email the office.

Stay Safe everyone !!!!!

Cheers,
Kent & Della

Closed Nov. 8 – 23

November 8, 2020 T. White

Hi All Abbotsford Curlers,

On behalf of your president Gord Wallington and the Board of Directors the curling facility will now be closed for 2 weeks until November 24 as directed by the PHO order on Saturday.

As you are no doubt aware, the positive Covid 19 numbers have climbed at an alarming rate over the last several days. At a special briefing yesterday, Dr. Henry, the PHO, outlined new orders to try and flatten the curve. As many of our members are compromised or have family members who are compromised, it is important that we do our part to ensure their safety and the safety of us all. With this in mind the Board has made the decision to close the club for the next two weeks effective today.

We feel it is important that we ALL do our part to help stop the spread of COVID and keep our families safe and healthy. This break will also give us the opportunity to review our safety plan to ensure we are doing everything possible to provide a safe place for you all to curl and visit your friends.

We look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice in 2 weeks.

I will keep you all informed as decisions are made and if things change.

Stay Safe everyone !!!!!

Cheers,

Kent & Della

Happy Easter

April 12, 2020April 12, 2020 T. White

Happy Easter Everyone !!!

Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy & safe during these challenging times. We have no reported cases of anyone from the club having the Covid-19 virus so this is great news but if anyone has any other news they want to share with the club please send us an email. I have heard from the Masters curling club president Gord Wallington and he has confirmed all of their members are feeling fine, other than being bored, and doing their part of self isolating and distancing. I am sure there will be lots of clean houses and yards this spring.

The club as you all know is closed but we are doing well. The ice is out and the floor is clean, ready for any city testing or services. We finally received the New Horizons grant from the government in the amount of $23,000. We applied for this grant last summer to fund some club projects. We have completed the installation a new PA system thanks to Sapphire Sound and Geoff Beulens for making this happen. The next project will be to replace the remaining kitchen counters & cabinets as well as a new dishwasher. We will look at having this done over the summer and ready for the fall. The city is planning to replace the windows in the upstairs lounge as well.

The club financials look promising again with the club keeping in the black and projecting a small net income come year end on May 31. Once this pandemic is under control I will be in touch with everyone to see who is still planning on curling in the fall. As of now we are still planning on starting in September but will keep you posted with regular emails.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and keeping their distance.

Take care everyone !!!

Cheers,

Kent & Della

Club Update March 20, 2020

March 22, 2020 T. White

The Golf Tournament is cancelled for 2020. We have decided to cancel the event for this year so hope everyone can stay healthy and we can all get back to our normal lives asap, if that is possible.

We will also be keeping the club closed so if anyone needs anything from their lockers please e-mail the club and we will arrange a time for you to come pick up your items. We will NOT be opening the doors on March 23-24 as hoped.

We will still be hosting the BC Mixed Championships in the fall and will keep you posted as to when we can confirm a date. Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer, we will be in touch.

Well week 1 of self isolation is in the books and my yard is looking amazing and Della is doing some serious spring cleaning. I can’t find anything in the kitchen but it is spotless. Della and I are both feeling fine, slight cough and sniffles but probably allergies, energy and spirits are good.

Hope everyone is staying healthy and keeping their distance.

Take care everyone !!!

Cheers,

Kent & Della

Closed for the Season

March 14, 2020March 14, 2020 T. White

Please see the notice from the Board of Directors below. Effective immediately, the club will be closed for the season and all curling is cancelled.

URGENT

In light of the corona virus (covid-19) outbreak, this morning the Board of Directors decided, that effective immediately, the curling rink, including the lounge, is closed for the rest of this season.  All curling related events and activities are cancelled.  This includes all league play, practice ice, bonspiels, programs and events.  The ice will be removed as soon as Kent is ready to do so.

The Board and Kent are presently working on the many details, such as gaining access to lockers, raised by this sudden closure.  Watch for future up-dates.

We trust that everyone understands the reason for the Board taking this stance.  We appreciate your patience as we work through the details.
